Kitchen Cabinets

Choosing cabinets can be confusing. At Custom Designed Kitchens & Bath, we can help you choose cabinets that match your style and please the eye. We can also help you maximize the functionality of the cabinets based on the layout of your kitchen.

To make the right choice when you purchase kitchen cabinets, you need to know what is available. Here are some of the most common options:

Style

Traditional kitchen cabinets use face frames - a visible frame around the doors and drawers.

European (International) cabinets have doors and drawers that are even with the face of the cabinet. The hinges in this type of cabinets do not show.

Size

Most kitchen cabinets come in a standard size. The height and width are adjustable in three-inch increments.

Choosing a size is often not difficult as manufacturers make their cabinets to standard sizes. The height and width of a typical cabinet can be made larger or smaller in three-inch increments.

When you decide which type of cabinet will look best in your kitchen, you'll need to figure the size. Here, manufacturers make it easy. Stock and modular cabinets are sold in standard heights, with widths that run in three-inch increments.

Materials

Knowing what your cabinets are made of is important as well. Most cabinets are built of “solid wood,” which can mean either genuine wood or a wood/particle board mix. Here are some of the options:

Genuine wood cabinets are the most expensive.

Wood/Particle Board Mix is particle board covered with a layer of wood on the outside. It is the most common type of material used for cabinets. Some experts feel that particle board offers more stability for a cabinet box than genuine wood. Often particle board is used for the inside of the cabinets, and real wood is used on the doors and frames. The sides feature a wood veneer over particle board. On the inside, the particle board usually is covered with a vinyl veneer.

Price

Higher-priced cabinets will feel more durable because the wood is thicker. Also, the finish will be smoother because more varnish is used when the cabinet is made. Higher quality cabinets also tend to have tight, smooth joints that hide nails better. Vinyl may be used, but usually just on the inside of the cabinet.

Lower-priced cabinets may not be as expensive as some of the high-end options, but they are not lacking in quality, style, or appeal. There are many great options that can provide the look, feel, and prestige you desire. These cabinets will probably have vinyl on the outside. The hinges and drawer glides will often be the same quality as the high-priced options.

Before you buy any cabinets, inspect them well. Make sure staples, nails and other connectors don’t protrude. Test the drawers. You’ll be sliding them in and out for many years. If they wobble now, someday they may bow or bend and stop working. Whether you are remodeling, rennovating, or building we are your clear choice for Kitchen and Bathroom Needs.
