Tips for Choosing Appliances

Do your research. Study websites and consumer publications that give brand name ratings, available features, and prices. Before going shopping, take notes and narrow your choices to a few specific brands and models.

Evaluate durability and serviceability. The quality of the basic components of an appliance is more important than the number of new and unique options. Focus on things like the power output of a microwave oven, the number of spraying arms in a dishwasher, and the storage capacity of a refrigerator/freezer which are crucial to the appliance's value and dependability.

Make sure it fits. You only have a certain amount of space to put the appliance. Make a list of exact measurements of the space available for each appliance. Remember, you will probably have the product for many years, so when making size and capacity decisions, take into consideration things like potential changes in family size or lifestyle.

Shop around. Don’t assume that a warehouse or discount store has the lowest price. Check for sales at other stores and online. If you are flexible on what you want, sometimes you can get large discounts on discontinued models.

Consider the value of warranty in addition to the price. Ask about the extent of the warranty. Which parts are covered? Does the warranty include labor? Will the warranty be honored by another dealer?

Check on installation requirements. Each appliance may have its own requirements. For example, an icemaker on a refrigerator requires a water line. A downdraft fan on a cooktop eliminates the need for overhead ventilation, but the vent pipe needs outdoor access.

Find out what is included in the price. If an appliance requires professional installation, ask if that is included in the purchase price. If you choose to install the appliance yourself, be certain the installation charges aren't included in your purchase price.
